Many companies that offer dropshipping on the internet are middlemen, not real dropshippers. One thing you will see a lot of is upfront fees. Personally I do not understand why anyone would want to pay upfront fees to buy something. It’s a bit like going to your newsagents and being stopped at the door to pay an entrance fee! For what? So you can go in the shop to see if he has anything of interest. And then when you pay the entrance fee, you go in and find the paper you wanted was sold out. Newsagent is happy you just paid him to find out that he didn’t have what you want, and now you have to go to another shop.

It’s a bit like this with some of these drop shipping companies. They charge you a fee and after you paid to get in and get access you find that they don’t have what you want or they are selling goods for more than your local shop. You have no chance of selling these and making a profit.

The problem is that drop shipping and e commerce is growing. And you are getting people jumping on the bandwagon.

Someone will come along and find a genuine drop shipping company, and then they will put together a fancy website with lots of bells and whistles, and advertise themselves as a dropshipper. They will charge you a fee to become a customer, after paying their fee you will put the stock they are advertising on your website or eBay when you get a sale and forward the details to your new dropshipper. They will then intern pass the details on to the genuine dropshipper. Who will complete the sale. Basically your dropshipper is a middle man. Your goods will be overpriced as they are taking a cut out for themselves. Also you will find customer service slow. Every time you have a problem and ask your supplier he then has to go to the original dropshipper to get the answer.

Most genuine dropshipping companies are an offshoot of a wholesaler or manufacturer. A genuine wholesaler will carry large stocks of items.

Think about the supply chain for a moment.

A typical factory is geared up to produce hundreds if not thousands of the same item. They would find it very hard to keep selling these one at a time to the public, as they only want one item.

The same goes for most of the high street shops they sell single items to the public, could you imagine your corner shop with 100s of each item. His store room would have to be 10 times the size of the shop. Shop owners tend to buy stock in by the dozen usually. He has a nice fancy shop as he needs to attract passing customers and his store room is out of site.

This is where the wholesaler fits in. They can buy in hundreds or thousands as they are selling a dozen at a time to the shops. They usually supply many shops thus they need plenty of stock to keep them supplied. They do not have passing trade like the shop. So an attractive premise is not as important, they just want to shift goods out by the carton to the shopkeeper. The shop keeper in turn wants the goods at the best possible price so he can make a reasonable profit

How does this relate to dropshipping?

Well with dropshiping you have two types of dropshippers setting up.

The first does not have a warehouse full of stock; usually it is just an office or even a spare room in their house. They will spend their time making a nice fancy website that will get your attention. They will then make their money in two ways. First they will charge you an upfront fee. Multiply that fee by the thousands of people coming to their fancy site and you will see they make a good living just from the fee alone. Then when you order from them say you buy an item let’s call it a widget at £5.00 in the hope of selling it for £10. They will then go to the dropshipping company and pay them £3.00 for the item making £2.00 for just passing your email along. You will find that the shops are selling the widget at £5.99 so you are left with making 99p per sale less your overheads.

The second type of dropshipper is the warehouse. Over the years their customers have started to have a web presence, so to keep up they have introduced a dropshipping department. As this is an add on to their core business it may not have all the fancy bells and whistles of some websites. It is used to just moving stock out. There won’t be any fancy office just a computer in the warehouse office, they do not need to charge you a fee to buy from them as they make their money from the wholesale trade. Say you buy the same widget at £3.00. You can now sell the widget at £5.99 making £2.99 per sale.

So how do you find the real wholesaler/dropshipper and not the middleman?

It takes time and legwork but the best place to start is by contacting wholesalers and asking if they drop ship. Or if you contact dropshippers ask if they carry the stock they sell in their own warehouse. Even ask to visit. There are plenty of genuine wholesalers out there that do drop ship now and they don’t charge a fee!

Whether you have antique or new crystal you want to make sure you take care of it. It does’t matter how or where you got your crystal, it needs to be properly taken care of so that it lasts. You don’t want to break or damage your crystal due to lack of knowledge. Here are a few tips for properly taking care of your crystal.

First thing you will need to do is make sure your crystal is displayed or stored properly. If you want to display your crystal it is best to display it in a dust free case. It is also good to keep it out of direct sunlight and humidity. Both of these conditions can damage the glue. Most people choose to display their precious crystal and use it only for special occasions.

When you do get your crystal out to use you will want to use it carefully since it is delicate and most likely valuable. When using your crystal do not let little children use it as they are clumsy and could break it. When using your glasses you need to make sure that you rinse them after you are done using them. If you leave acidic liquids in the cup for too long it can make the lead leech out of the crystal.

If you have candleholders you will want to make sure you use soy wax or beeswax candles. Low quality waxes are not good for your crystal. You do need to keep in mind that there is still a chance of something getting broken when you use it. No matter how careful you are accidents still can and will happen. If you are not prepared to deal with broken crystal you may want to think twice before getting it out to use. You may want to just leave on display instead.

When cleaning your glassware you need to be careful. Do not wipe any dust off of the crystal as this may scratch it. You want to use a can of air to do this. When you wash your crystal you never ever want to put it in the dishwasher. Washing by hand with a mild detergent is best. You will still need to be careful so that you do not break the crystal on the faucet or in the sink. Some people line their sinks with towels just to be on the safe side, you can also find faucet covers.

After you wash the crystal you will want to let it air dry. Do not use a towel to dry the crystal as this can cause scratching from the towel or dust particles. After you crystal is dry you will want to make sure you store it properly to avoid any damage.

Business reporter, BBC News

The recovery will be very gradual
It is Barack Obama’s 200th day in office, but he’s unlikely to be celebrating.

The latest US unemployment figures are better than expected but still a depressing read, with 247,000 US citizens losing their jobs in July.

It means that a total of 9.4% of the population is now out of work.

Although this is a marked improvement on the figures for June, economists say unemployment is likely to reach an uncomfortable 10% this year.

There is one tiny ray of light on the horizon – analysts widely agree that technically the recession is likely to end in the latter half of 2009.

The bad news is that it is going to be a long time before many people notice.

Turning point

“Although the economy seems to be at a turning point, we’re not at a turning point for the labour market,” says Brian Bethune at IHS Global Insight. “That is still some way off.”

A report by Capital Economics says the recession is technically likely to come to an end during the third quarter of the year, partly as a result of the US government’s $787billion fiscal stimulus. It is during this same period that other experts predict unemployment may hit 10%.

“Unfortunately, even once GDP [gross domestic product] begins to grow, it will likely take still longer for employment to stop falling and begin to rise,” says White House economics adviser Christine Romer.

It is not unusual for unemployment to lag behind recovery – the labour market does not automatically improve the moment the economy turns around.

Slow growth

Essentially the recovery might be a recovery in a purely technical sense, but if the economy is growing below the rate at which it’s capable of growing, it isn’t going to do a lot of good

John Higgins
But recovery following a global financial crisis tends to be extremely slow, meaning that it will be a long time before the economy is back to its full potential and industry is working at capacity.

Only then will employers have enough work available to take on extra staff.

The US economy is predicted to experience very weak growth of 1% in 2010, and 2% in 2011. In a healthy climate, a ballpark average growth figure is about 3%.

“It’s a modestly positive rate of growth, but that doesn’t mean that conditions are improving,” says John Higgins, Senior Markets Economist at Capital Economics.

“Essentially the recovery might be a recovery in a purely technical sense, but if the economy is growing below the rate at which it’s capable of growing, it isn’t going to do a lot of good.”

Scrappage success

There are a few encouraging signs. The US version of the car scrappage scheme – “cash for clunkers” – has resulted in more than 220,000 car sales, and has just been granted a $2bn extension.

It has had a positive impact on the manufacturing industry. Morgan Stanley economist Richard Berner says that vehicle production in July was 60% higher than it was in June, and he is confident that it will continue to rise.

Generally though, the outlook for employment in the near future does not look promising.

“The job cuts have been more severe and widespread than during past recessions,” says Ed Yardeni, president of independent investment consultant Yardeni Research.

“Businesses seem to be betting that when their sales recover, they’ll be able to increase output with greater productivity. If my analysis is correct, then the employment recovery will be lacklustre.”

Artists, craftspeople and photographers are successfully selling their wares everyday on the online auction site, eBay. According to a recent analysis of eBay sales, a crafts-related item is sold every nine seconds, a scrapbook item is sold every minute, and 40 cross-stitch items sell in an hour on eBay. Sales of craft items on eBay have grown almost 60 percent in the past year, according to TheBidFloor.com.

But, at the same time, many would be sellers are listing their pieces for sale on auctions and getting no bids, concluding that eBay just doesn’t work.

Here are some tips from James Dillehay, craft artist, eBay seller and author of the new book, “Sell Your Crafts on eBay” (Warm Snow Publishers), on how to profitably sell your wares online:

1. A word’s spelling impacts an item’s profitability. For example, the word ‘handmade,’ spelled as one word, was part of 2,233 auction titles with an average closing price of $16.29. However, auction titles that included ‘hand made’ as two words were found in 1,358 listings, but with an average auction closing price higher, at $27.81, or $11.52 more profit per item.

2. Go to eBay.com and find the search box. Type in the word or phrase that describes your art or craft item. Then scroll down the links on the left side of the page and click on the link for “completed items.” Here, you’ll be able to see the demand for this type of product. Do searches for your items every two to three weeks to chart buying patterns.

3. Find out how much people are willing to pay for your wares. Click on the link that says “highest price.” This will give you a list of completed auctions from highest priced items to lowest priced ones. You want to know what people are willing to pay for items like yours. If you can’t make and sell your product for a profit, eBay might not be your marketplace.

4. Determine how much money you’ll make on your product. To determine your profitability, use the cost of your materials plus the cost of your labor plus the cost of your selling price, which should be the minimum price to recover your expenses. If it takes you eight hours to make a piece of jewelry and the highest priced similar item sells on eBay for $26, you won’t make a profit.

5. Look at the elements of successful sellers of products that are similar to yours. Examine their winning auction titles. Observe how much detail they use to describe their item. See if the seller used any of eBay’s special features such as gallery photos or a bold, featured listing. Evaluate the starting price, starting day of the week, and duration of winning auctions.

By: Peter Lawless
As with everything, it does not take rocket science to get this right, however one slip, could seriously damage your bottom line. The three factors, equally weighted are as follows:

The value that your customers put on your product and service
Will you make a profit?
What your competitors charge for the same or equivalent
So how do we define customer value?
Value is what a purchaser gets when they make use of your product or service. It is the figure that they put on, their new capabilities. Ones that you have delivered to him through ownership of what you sell.

Value is not always quantified in monetary terms. A golfer may go to a professional, get three lessons, and knock 10 off their handicap – so what is that worth to them? If they had previously spent $5,000 on lessons and still been awful, it could be worth an awful lot.

The most important consideration is that the buyer must feel that they got “good value” from their purchase.

However this good value must not be sold at a loss!
Given, you are in business to make a profit, it is important that you do not sell everything at a loss. It is fine to have loss leaders and indeed, offer freebies, to encourage new clients, or to reward loyal customers. However you business must be profitable, or else you will not have one.

To understand whether you are making profit from a product or group of products, you should factor in all fixed and variable costs. Then look at how many you will sell, and ensure it is worth your while selling at that price.

But what if it’s good for you and your customer, but your competitor is cheaper!
First and foremost, check that what they are selling is identical to what you are selling. If it is, all you will do is create a market that your competitor will clean up on.

The good news is that in 99.99% of cases, your products or services are not identical. This is where creating your unique value proposition is vital. This needs to distinguish you as being the best solution in your chosen target market or niche.

It is important also to realize that the best solution may also not be the cheapest. Let’s go back to the golf pro. He charges $60 a lesson for his services; his competitor charges $30 a lesson. But if what you want is rapid improvement, and this guy has testimonials to prove what he has done, by spending $180 with him, to get 10 shots off your round of golf, could save you thousands, that you could have spent with the $30 guy.

The bottom line is that your pricing must take into account the three key considerations; providing the better value than your competitors, at a profitable price.

If you need help with your pricing strategy, give us a call, we would be delighted to help.

Feng Shui consultants quite often suggest crystals as part of their practice. These can be found in many gift stores.. While the use of crystals sometimes are not seen as part of traditional Feng Shui many people do enjoy collecting and displaying crystals.
The crystal that you choose is a personal decision and your choice should be made according to the planned purpose of your crystal and where in the home you will place it,
Crystals are natural energy generators; Crystal attracts and holds energy as well as transmitting energy outwards. Imagine how many people have held onto a crystal before you take it home. Each person that holds a crystal leaves a residue of their energy on its surface. Sometimes when you pick up a crystal it can actually feel as if it has a coating on it. Some say this is an accumulation of energy built up on the surface. You should remove the residue of energy when you bring it to your home. Also as it sits in that special place in your home or office it will also start to collect energy that regularly needs to be cleansed. To make sure that it does not hold any negative energy and keeps working properly, as well as this, cleaning will keep it sparkling as it should;
if your crystal has dust on it you can rinse it in luke warm salt water. Let it air dry completely in a sunny spot before putting it back on display.
The full moon can be a powerful force, the night before of the next full moon set out your crystals and let the moon do the work and empower them. This is good for crystals that might be full of negative energy.
When your larger crystals have been cleaned any jewellery you have worn at times of stress or sadness can be placed on the clean crystal and left for a day or two.
